High Line Study
While in residence at CUE I created a nearly life-size replica of a portion of The High Line. Constructing the piece from aluminum foil, hot glue, and tape, this fragile reproduction drew inspiration from the landmarking of the West Chelsea Historic District in July 2008, as well as CUE’s location in one of the Reynolds Metals Co.’s former warehouses. (Reynolds Metals makes aluminum foil.) Referencing Chelsea’s industrial history, as well as the significant change West Chelsea has undergone in the last 15-20 years, the piece also addressed the changing nature of neighborhoods in New York City. The High Line, one of the city’s major urban revitalization projects, will create public space for New Yorkers, but in the process will potentially price residents, organizations, and any remaining industry out of West Chelsea.
