Dis/Integrations
For this installation at Swarm Gallery, I spent three weeks at the gallery in Oakland and based the work on my observations about the surrounding district. When walking around the Jack London Square district, I was struck by the combination of historic preservation efforts, the suburbanization of the area (big box stores are anchor tenants,) and the developer-driven revitalization of a long-failed tourist destination. What is interesting about the district is that it seems underutilized in many ways and for many reasons. The Jack London Square district is clearly a place in a state of flux. I am interested in how an area in flux can forget it’s own history, and suffer losses (of historic or old structures, and important industries/businesses) that are vital to the area’s cultural history. I am keenly aware of the lost stories that may have come before the ones that currently shape this area of Oakland.
