I am an installation artist and educator. In addition to teaching in universities, art schools and museums, I work one-on-one and in small groups with students young and old. I often advise college-bound students to help them get into their first-choice art school or college. I also work with family caregivers of people living with dementia to help them connect through art.
One-to-One Instruction
Working with people of all ages one-on-one, I create a tailor-made learning experience to meet each individual’s needs. I work with learners of all levels—from complete beginners, to more advanced, and I hold 15 years experience teaching students with learning differences and disabilities.
What I Do:
I create a positive and supportive atmosphere for artists of all ages to feel safe to experiment and make art boldly.
I create a program that is complimentary to what students are learning in school.
I ensure students feel nurtured and challenged throughout their art-making exploration.
I expose students to historical and contemporary art references as a way to contextualize learning.
What I teach:
Traditional Foundational Drawing: Empowering students with the fundamental skills they will take into any future art-making endeavor. Drawing instruction covers observational drawing skills, perspective drawing, color theory, still life and portraiture.
Painting and 2D Media: For the student with drawing experience. Focus on observational skills, physical properties of materials, paint-handling, and mixed-media.
Sculpture and 3D: Using traditional and non-traditional sculpture materials, instruction centers around material properties, exploration, and forms in space.
Small Group Instruction
Group learning of all ages depends on an energetic and focused group dynamic. I will set the tone with your small group for sessions that are light in tone while rigorous in purpose.
Ideal for families, small learning pods and people bringing together groups of learners.
Best suited for groups of 2-8 students, age 14 and up.
What I Do:
I create a positive and open group dynamic that supports all participants to create freely.
I create a program tailor-made to the needs of your group, that changes with the interests, abilities and inclinations of the group.
I expose students to a variety of media and encourage them to experiment, so that they learn what materials and processes best fit their creative pursuits in design, art, architecture or fashion.
What I teach:
I teach foundational skills that help each student improve their eye, gain facility with the material, and develop their own visual language.
I guide students towards materials and methods they feel an affinity with. For example, students might learn: mark-making possibilities of using soft-hard graphite, the quick-drying nature of acrylic paint, the velvety blending of soft pastel, or how to best create a visual narrative through bookmaking.
Outcomes:
Understanding and facility with art materials
Increased confidence making and discussing art
Critical thinking and reflection skills essential to pursuing any art-related path
